Jordan Beutel (South Florida)
Trans artist based out of Southwest Florida.Riptide Zen is a visual immersion of my journey to authenticity and the audacity of expressing authentically in our culture. My art and poetry resonate with anyone searching for authenticity and struggling against the constructs of society. It also includes confronting my gender identity and the emotions I encounter in the struggle between conforming to society’s needs and living authentically against the odds.
I grew up in a time and place where there were no words to describe my authentic experience the only words that came close were slurs, so I stayed silent. I adopted many identities throughout my life and reached a point where the masks became too heavy to carry. I cracked under the pressure and began putting the pieces back together and began my journey to my authentic self.
I use art and poetry interchangeably during my journey to express the vast array of emotions I am feeling. When I can’t find the words to express my emotions, I use art to evoke them through patterns, shapes, and colors. When the words are too hard to say, I hide them in my art.
Every human has an identity and authenticity that is innate to them. The journey to living it, self-actualization, is something everyone feels and is full of the entire spectrum of emotions. My art and poetry convey emotions that are familiar to the viewer. For this reason, the connection is deeply emotional and empowering. Every human can embark on their journey and Riptide Zen comforts and encourages that by being authentic to the human experience of self-discovery.
