BOY BEFORE

Director: Onyeka Oduh

2020 | CANADA | MIN

A story about the pains of growing up and having to face the problems that come with it, in a world that seems to suggest that hiding or running away is the only solution.

On the eve of the new year 1999, Tiras Lavalle, is coming into his adulthood as any teenager would, full of confusion and anxiety. He decides to call on an old friend, Kare, to distract him from the suddenness of a major change in his life and aid him on his quest for self-discovery.

Boy Before is the thesis film of recent graduates of the Film and Television AdvancedDiploma Program at Humber College. Written and Directed by Onyeka Oduh, BoyBefore is a queer, bilingual coming-of-age short that focuses on the pains of growing up and having to face the problems that come with that on your own, in a world that seems to echo that hiding or running away is the only solution. The film is loosely based on true events from the filmmaker’s own life and takes stylistic inspiration from the French New Wave era of filmmaking. Boy Before is intended to be a love letter to queer youth and their futures.
